I believe having a motion controller is the way to go- it handles all the high-speed real-time stuff like generating pulses and reacting to inputs, while the computer plans everything out ~100ms into the future. (There are exceptions, but those are the broad philosophical takes of the two applications. The major difference between Mach4 and LinuxCNC (besides cost) is that Mach4 expects you to have a separate motion controller, and LinuxCNC doesn't. The bugs I've encountered are fairly minor and never affect machine movement. It has some very substantial improvements over Mach3. It's not perfect, but it does work well now.
